The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self

What is the resource about?

-Trueman describes the historical and philosophical underpinnings of the current focus on sexual identity and its connection to ‘self’. Analyzing the theories promoted by authors such as Rousseau, Freud, Simone de Beauvoir, and x, Trueman demonstrates that the logical conclusion of their ideas would lead to a society in which trangenderism, not LGTBQ+, pornography, and y are the prevailing practices.

Why is it important?

-The Obergefell vs. Hodges court case in 2015 legalized same-sex marriage in the United States. Just a few years earlier, the then-president Barack Obama had promoted the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and had insisted that same-sex marriage would not become a reality in the US. The fact that such a societal change took place so quickly was surprising to many. And then, the move from legalizing same-sex marriage to promoting transgenderism withiin schools, the military, and the rest of society took place in a much shorter time period. How could that happen? What will that lead to next?

What should I do?

-Become familiar with the current arguments used to support the transgendered movement and note the internal inconsistencies of the arguments. (Those inconsistencies are actually irrelevant for the reasons Trueman gives.) Read the Bible to understand how God would have us view these arguments and how we would support a biblical alternative to the modern self.
